Gas grill burner won't stay lit? Fix it without a new grill.
If your grill lights but the flame dies in seconds, burns too low to cook, or keeps going out mid-session, you almost certainly do not need a new grill. Most stay-lit problems trace to one of two things: a tripped safety in the regulator, or a blocked path for gas to reach the burner. Work this ladder in order, free fixes first.

If you smell gas, do not try to light the grill and do not flip any electrical switch. Turn all burner knobs off, close the tank valve, step away, and run a soapy-water leak test once the area is clear, or call a technician. A leak is not a DIY fix.

First: is it one burner, or all of them?
This single question splits the problem in half. All burners weak points upstream at the tank or regulator. One burner misbehaving points to that burner's own ports or tube.

Work these in order. The first three cost nothing. Only reach for a part once you've cleared every rung above it.
Reset the regulator's safety bypass
Flame lights then dies, or all burners run low. Try this first.
Deep dive
Most stay-lit failures, especially right after a tank swap or after storage, come from the regulator's built-in excess-flow safety tripping into low-flow mode. It chokes gas when it senses a sudden surge, usually from opening the tank valve too fast, or with a burner knob left open.
If this started right after you connected a new tank or opened the valve quickly, that is the most likely cause and worth ruling out first.
- Turn all burner knobs off.
- Close the tank valve fully (clockwise until snug, do not overtighten).
- Disconnect the regulator from the tank.
- Open the grill lid fully. A closed lid can hold residual pressure.
- Wait a full 30 seconds so the regulator bleeds down and resets.
- Reconnect the regulator and hand-tighten.
- Open the tank valve slowly, over about 3 to 4 seconds. A fast snap open re-trips the lockout.
- Light the grill normally.
This resolves it in most cases. If the flame still dies after a proper reset, the regulator itself may be failing. See the parts section.
Check the tank: low gas or a cold-weather freeze
Flame starts strong then fades, or dies only in the cold.
Deep dive
Low tank: propane gives almost no warning before it runs dry, and the last bit of a tank delivers inconsistent pressure. Lift the tank; a full 20 lb tank feels heavy, an empty one almost weightless. For a closer read, pour a little warm water down the side and feel for where the metal turns cooler. That line is roughly the propane level.
Swap or refill an empty tank. A tank exchange is inexpensive, less than a bag of charcoal.
Cold weather: below about 40 degrees, liquid propane can pull heat out of the regulator faster than the air replaces it, frosting the regulator and restricting flow. Look for ice on the regulator body or tank valve during use. Let the tank warm up before cooking, and store the spare indoors until needed. Never put open flame or a heat gun on the regulator. Warm (not hot) water poured over the tank body is safe if ice forms mid-cook.
Clear clogged burner ports and venturi tubes
One burner weak, yellow flame, or a section that won't light? Look for a spider web.
Deep dive
One burner won't stay lit while the others are fine means a blockage local to that burner. All burners weak points to a supply problem instead. Yellow, uneven, or partly extinguished flame points to clogged ports.
Spiders and insects are drawn to the faint gas odor and build nests inside venturi tubes, especially over winter storage. Even a single small web can cut gas flow dramatically.
To check and clear: let the grill cool and disconnect the propane. Remove the grate, heat tents, and lift the burner out (most pop up or have one retaining screw, check your manual). Shine a flashlight into the venturi tube opening for webbing or debris. Run a venturi brush or thin pipe cleaner from the inlet end toward the burner. Do not water-rinse a cast iron burner, it accelerates rust. For clogged ports on the burner itself, clear each hole with a stiff wire or a straightened paper clip, working from outside in. Rinse stainless or steel burners with water and dry fully before reinstalling.

Venturi / burner-tube cleaning brush
A spider web or debris plug inside the burner tube is the most overlooked reason a single burner won't stay lit. A long, thin brush clears it in under a minute. No parts, no gas tech, just the brush.
Most port clogs and weak flames are a cleaning problem. A regular brush-down keeps gas flowing cleanly. We tested a bunch and found brushes that won't leave wire bristles in your food. Here are the ones we trust.
Reset didn't fix it? Replace the part
You've run the reset, the tank is full and not frosted, and the burner ports are clear, but the flame still won't hold. Now it's worth replacing a part. A weak flame on every burner points to the regulator. A weak or uneven flame on one burner, with rust visible in the tube, points to that burner. Both parts are model-specific, so match them to your grill before ordering.

Replacement regulator + hose assembly
If the reset did not help and the flame is starved at every burner, the regulator itself has likely failed. These are inexpensive and last about a decade. Match LP (propane) or natural gas, and confirm your grill's fitting and hose length before ordering. LP and NG regulators are not interchangeable.

Replacement burner tube (match your model)
Burner tubes rust through at the ports over time, so gas escapes before it reaches the flame. A weak flame that flickers out, or one that barely covers the grate, is usually a tube that has corroded through. This is a model-specific part: search for your brand and model to find the right one, and measure length and inlet diameter before ordering.

With the grill cold and gas off, find the valve orifice where it meets the venturi tube inlet. Grease can migrate back during a flare-up and partly block it. Wipe the orifice exterior gently with a dry cloth or soft brush. Do not enlarge the orifice with a drill or wire: its size is calibrated to deliver the correct output, and opening it up creates a dangerous over-gas condition. If you suspect an internal blockage, that is a job for a qualified gas appliance technician.
Fix the burner, or replace the grill?
If the burner or regulator is the only problem, parts are inexpensive and the fix is quick. But if your grill also has rusted grates, a corroded firebox, or burners crumbling to the touch, you're past a single-part fix. The most likely cause is the regulator's built-in excess-flow safety tripping into low-flow mode after the grill heats up and gas demand rises. Run the full reset from Rung 1: turn everything off, disconnect the regulator, wait 30 seconds, reconnect, and open the tank valve slowly. If the flame is also yellow or uneven, check for clogged burner ports (Rung 3). If neither fixes it, the regulator may be failing (Rung 4).
You most likely tripped the regulator's excess-flow safety by opening the new tank valve too quickly, or with a burner knob left open. The regulator senses the sudden surge and throttles flow to a trickle. The fix is the reset procedure in Rung 1. This is the single most common issue after a tank swap.
A single misbehaving burner almost always means a local issue with that burner, not the tank or regulator, which would affect all burners. Start by inspecting the venturi tube for a spider web or debris nest (Rung 3). If the tube is clear, check the burner ports for blockage. If the burner tube itself has rust holes or heavy corrosion, replace it (Rung 5).
A visible but low flame usually points to either the regulator delivering below-normal pressure (Rung 4) or a partially clogged burner not moving enough gas (Rung 3). Do the reset first. If the grill still tops out well below cooking heat with all burners on high and a full tank, the regulator is the most likely culprit. Also check the lid thermometer: many factory lid thermometers read inaccurately, often low.
A yellow or orange flame means the gas is not getting enough air to burn cleanly. The burner ports or the venturi air shutter near the valve orifice are likely restricted. A yellow flame can also be grease burning off, which is normal after a long gap between cleanings. Persistent yellow flame with weak output after cleaning points to a partially blocked burner or venturi. See Rung 3.
Cold temperatures lower propane vapor pressure in the tank. In a hard freeze, propane vaporizes slowly enough to starve the burner under full load, and the tank and regulator can frost over, restricting flow further. Keep your spare tank stored inside before a cold-weather cook, and accept that in very cold weather your grill simply runs at lower output. This is a physical limit of propane, not a defect.
A brief hiss under a second when you first open the valve is normal; it is the regulator pressurizing. A continuous hiss, or one that does not stop, is not normal and needs attention. Close the valve, move away from the grill, and run a soapy-water leak test along all connections before using the grill again. If you smell gas strongly and cannot find a loose fitting, do not use the grill and contact a technician.
If the full reset (Rung 1) restores a normal flame, the regulator is fine; it was just tripped. If you reset it correctly and all burners still run low, the tank is full and not frosted, and the burners are clean, the regulator is the most likely remaining cause. Regulators give little warning before they degrade, so weak output across all burners after ruling out everything else is the diagnostic. Most last 5 to 10 years; if yours is older and showing symptoms, replacement is a reasonable call.
