Propane grill not getting hot enough? The regulator is the usual cause.

When a propane grill tops out well below cooking temperature, the regulator's safety bypass is the number-one cause, and a two-minute reset fixes it for free most of the time. If instead just one burner is weak while the others run fine, that is a different problem, so use the symptom links below to jump straight to your fix.

The fix ladder (free fixes first)

Do every step below before considering a replacement part. Most grills are fixed at Step 1.

Reset the regulator bypass

All burners weak with a full tank? This is the fix in 90 percent of cases.

Deep dive

Modern propane regulators have a built-in excess-flow safety valve. When the tank valve is opened too quickly, the regulator senses the pressure surge and throttles gas flow to a small fraction of normal output. This is a protective response, not a malfunction, but it requires a deliberate reset to clear.

Common triggers: opening the tank valve too fast, opening the tank with a burner knob left in the on position, or reconnecting the regulator with the tank valve already open.

The full reset, step by step:

  1. Turn all burner knobs to off.
  2. Close the propane tank valve by turning it clockwise until it stops. Hand-tight, do not overtighten.
  3. Disconnect the regulator from the tank fitting by turning the knurled nut counterclockwise.
  4. Open the grill lid fully. This equalizes pressure and lets any trapped gas dissipate.
  5. Turn all burner knobs to on for about 60 seconds to bleed any residual pressure from the line. Then turn all knobs back to off.
  6. Wait a full 30 seconds with the regulator disconnected. This allows the excess-flow valve inside the regulator to return to its open state.
  7. Reconnect the regulator to the tank fitting and hand-tighten.
  8. Open the tank valve very slowly: one full turn over about 3 to 4 seconds. A fast snap will re-trigger the bypass.
  9. Wait another 30 seconds before attempting to light the grill.
  10. Light the grill on high. If the flame is now full and strong, the reset worked.

This procedure restores normal heat in the vast majority of cases. If all burners are still weak after a correctly executed reset, continue down the ladder.

Check the propane level

Low propane gives almost no warning before the grill starts losing heat.

Deep dive

Propane tanks do not have accurate built-in gauges on most consumer grills. The last quarter of a tank delivers inconsistent pressure, and an empty tank sometimes produces a faint but useless flame that looks like a regulator problem.

Two ways to check the level without a gauge:

Weight method: A full 20 lb propane tank weighs about 37 to 38 lbs total. An empty tank weighs about 17 to 19 lbs (the tare weight is usually stamped on the collar). Lift and estimate.

Warm-water method: Pour a small amount of warm (not hot) water slowly down the side of the tank. Run your hand along the metal from top to bottom. The tank will feel cooler where liquid propane is present and warmer above it. The transition line is roughly your propane level.

Refill or swap a tank that is low or empty. A tank exchange is the fastest option when you need to cook now.

Inspect the hose for kinks and leaks

A kinked or leaking hose starves the grill of gas just like a tripped regulator.

Deep dive

Trace the hose from the tank fitting through to where it connects to the grill. Look for any sharp bends, especially where the hose passes near the grill leg, cart handle, or where it was stored folded. Even a partial crimp cuts gas flow substantially.

Straighten any kinked sections. If the hose has a permanent kink, a cracked area, or any visible brittleness or checking in the rubber, it needs to be replaced, not straightened.

To check for leaks, mix dish soap and water into a loose lather and apply it to every fitting: the tank connection, the regulator body, and the hose-to-grill inlet. With the tank valve open and burners off, watch for any bubbles forming at a connection. A bubbling fitting is a leak. Tighten it and re-test. If bubbles continue, the fitting or hose needs replacement before the grill is used.

Clean the burners and venturi tubes

Clogged ports or a spider nest in the venturi tube can cut gas delivery to one or more burners.

Deep dive

With the grill fully cool and the propane disconnected, remove the cooking grates and flavorizer bars. Look at each burner tube: the small ports along the top should be clear and you should see light through them. Clogged ports look darkened or crusted over.

Clear each port with a stiff piece of wire or a straightened paper clip, pressing from the outside. Do not enlarge the ports. After clearing, sweep out loosened debris with a grill brush.

Next, check the venturi tubes. Spiders and mud daubers nest inside these tubes, especially during storage. To check: remove the burner from its support bracket and shine a flashlight into the venturi inlet (the wide flared opening that faces the valve). Any webbing or mud will be visible near the inlet. Run a long flexible brush from the inlet end to clear it.

Opening the tank valve slowly is the one habit that prevents most low-heat calls

The regulator bypass trips when it detects a pressure surge. That surge is almost always from opening the tank valve too fast. One full turn over 3 to 4 seconds is all it takes. Make that the habit and most low-heat problems will not occur.

Reset failed and tank is full? Replace the regulator

If a correctly executed reset does not restore full heat, and the tank is confirmed full and not frosted, the regulator itself has likely failed. Regulators are not repairable: they are replaced as a unit with the hose attached. They are inexpensive and straightforward to swap. Match LP (liquid propane) to LP, and confirm the hose length fits your grill's configuration before ordering.

FAQ

My grill worked fine yesterday. Why is it weak today?

The most likely cause is the regulator tripping into bypass mode overnight, sometimes from a small movement of the hose or a brief pressure event. Run the full regulator reset from Step 1 before anything else. It resolves the majority of sudden-onset weak-heat problems with no other change.

I did the regulator reset and it worked once but the problem came back.

If the bypass keeps tripping without a clear trigger, the regulator itself may be failing. A healthy regulator holds its set pressure; one that repeatedly trips on normal use is at end of life. Regulators typically last 5 to 10 years. If yours is older and acting up, replacement is the right call.

How do I check if my propane tank is empty without a gauge?

Two reliable methods. First, lift the tank: a full 20 lb tank feels distinctly heavy, an empty one almost weightless. Second, pour a small amount of warm water slowly down the side of the tank and then run your hand down it. The metal will feel cooler where liquid propane sits and warmer above it. The line where it transitions is roughly your propane level.

What does the regulator bypass actually do?

The regulator has a built-in excess-flow valve that detects a sudden large pressure surge and cuts gas flow to a fraction of normal, usually around 10 percent of full output. It interprets the surge as a potential hose rupture or leak and throttles down as a safety response. Opening the tank valve too quickly is the most common trigger. The bypass resets when you disconnect the regulator, wait 30 seconds for it to bleed down, and reconnect with the tank valve opened slowly.

Can a kinked hose really cut my heat that dramatically?

Yes. Even a partial crimp in the hose reduces gas flow significantly. The regulator may also trip into bypass if it detects the sudden downstream pressure drop from a kink. Trace the hose from the tank to the grill and make sure it has no sharp bends, especially near where it connects. Replace any hose that shows cracking, brittleness, or a permanent kink.

My grill only runs low when it is cold outside. Is that a regulator problem?

Not exactly. Below about 40 degrees Fahrenheit, propane vaporizes more slowly and liquid propane can pool in the tank instead of vaporizing into gas. The regulator and hose can also frost over, restricting flow. This is a physical limit of propane, not a defect. Keeping a spare tank stored inside and letting the tank warm before a cold-weather cook helps significantly. A regulator rated for outdoor use in cold climates can also reduce frost-up issues.

Is it safe to do a soapy-water leak test on the hose myself?

Yes. With the grill off and all burner knobs closed, mix dish soap and water, and apply it to all connections: the tank fitting, the regulator body, and the hose-to-grill connection. Open the tank valve slowly. Bubbles forming at any connection point indicate a leak. Tighten the fitting and re-test. If bubbles continue after tightening, replace the hose or regulator. Do not use the grill until the connection holds without bubbles.
